Senior Eye Issues and Health
By age 65, one in three Americans have some kind of vision-impairing eye disease. Many people, however, don’t realize that their vision is deteriorating over time because it often comes hand in hand with other challenges of aging.
But poor eyesight is not something that seniors need to “suffer through.” In fact, maintaining good vision as you age is key to safely navigating your surroundings, communicating clearly and being a happy person! The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends a baseline eye disease screening exam at age 40. Even if you do not wear prescription lenses, it is important to have regular eye health exams, especially after age 60.
Seniors can preserve their sight with regular eye visits and updated prescriptions. Regular visits can also help in the early detection of serious conditions such as glaucoma, which can then be managed more effectively. Sometimes a surgical procedure, such as cataract surgery, can drastically improve your vision and therefore your quality of life.
